At her birth, a princess named Daffodil is given the gift of flowers by her fairy godmother. At first, the princess's parents are puzzled by the meaning of the gift.
They find out what it means soon enough as the palace grounds are overrun with flowers wherever Princess Daffodil walks. Upset by the flowery chaos she unwittingly creates, the King orders the Princess to stay off the garden paths, and walk only on the flower beds.
Other children envy the fact that Princess Daffodil can walk in an area forbidden to them. She, of course, longs to be able to run with them along the paths. Eventually, a solution is found that makes everybody happy.
